A Brief Introduction

Voice is more than a skill.

It's how we communicate, make art, express identity, connect with other people—and sometimes discover and explore our potential. We start by listening to you, including what you are interested in developing. From there, we bring technique, curiosity, experimentation, and creative practice.

This might mean developing your singing voice, exploring gender-affirming voice work, creating an original performance, or looking to be part of an artistic queer community.

Based in Downtown Toronto, with private sessions also available online.

Our Approach

We start by listening.

Good training isn't about deciding in advance what somebody else's creative voice should become.

We listen for what feels interesting, pleasurable, and important, and then bring technique and craft.

Sometimes that means building vocal strength and coordination. Sometimes it means trying a different sound. Sometimes it means developing a piece of performance from its first impulse to the stage. Sometimes it means just listening.

Technique gives us tools. Curiosity helps us decide what to do with them. Community gives us somewhere to practice.

Out There Singing is led by Oceana Dix, a voice educator, performer, drag artist, actor, and filmmaker.

Meet Oceana

With a Master's degree in Musical Theatre from the University of Surrey (UK), professional performance training, contemporary vocal pedagogy, and experience creating work across music, theatre, drag, and film, Oceana works across the boundaries between technical training and creative practice.

Their work centres curiosity, pleasure, identity, and the belief that people deserve both the tools to develop their craft and the space to decide what they want to do with them.

In Collaboration with Come As You Are

Out There Singing is proud to be developing our Gender-Affirming Voice Program in collaboration with Come As You Are and Gender Gear.

Come As You Are is a Toronto worker-owned co-operative with a long history of sex-positive education, community care, and supporting people in exploring gender, sexuality, pleasure, and their relationships with their bodies.

Together, we're creating a community-based approach to gender-affirming voice care that brings Out There Singing's vocal practice into conversation with CAYA's broader network of resources, education, and community support.
