Gender-Affirming Voice Program

Gender-Affirming Voice Program

A space to explore what becomes possible when you listen to your voice.

Our gender-affirming voice program brings together practical voice exploration, creative practice, pleasure, and community. Through Out There Singing and Come As You Are, participants are invited into a supportive space to explore their voices, follow their curiosity, build vocal comfort and confidence, and connect with others finding their own ways of being heard.

We started this program with a simple question in mind:

What becomes possible when we listen to what our voices are already asking for?

Voice can be practical, playful, expressive, intimate, artistic, gendered, ungendered—sometimes all at once.

Rather than beginning with an idea of what someone's voice should become, this program begins by listening. What feels good? What feels interesting? What are you curious about? What are you already reaching toward?

From there, we explore.

Participants will have access to gender-affirming voice support, vocal exploration, creative practice, community gatherings, and practical tools for developing a voice that feels comfortable, expressive and increasingly available to them.

You may want to explore pitch, resonance, vocal weight, range, speech or singing. You may want to explore storytelling, poetry, drag, theatre, movement, or simply discover what it feels like to use your voice differently.

There is no single voice we are working toward.

Instead, we use voice as a training ground: a place to try things, notice what feels good, build skills, take creative risks, and practice stepping more fully into possibilities that matter to you.

Community is part of that practice. Through gatherings and cabarets, participants can share work in progress, experiment, witness one another, or simply be present. You don't need to perform to belong.

Alongside the voice program, our partnership with Come As You Are and Gender Gear connects participants with a wider ecosystem of gender-affirming resources, pleasure-centred education, community knowledge and guest facilitators.

No previous performance experience is required.

No particular gender expression or vocal goal is required.

Bring your curiosity, your questions, and whatever voice you have today.

We're currently preparing the next Gender-Affirming Voice Program in Toronto.

If you'd like to hear when registration opens, receive invitations to community gatherings and cabarets, and follow the program's development, we'd love to keep in touch.

Meet Our Facilitators

Oceana Dix — Vocalist, voice educator, and founder of Out There Singing

Oceana Dix

Oceana Dix is a trans femme, gender expansive vocalist, actor, voice educator, and founder of Out There Singing. Holding a Master's degree in Musical Theatre from the University of Surrey (UK), they combine professional performance training with contemporary vocal pedagogy and lived experience as a trans artist to support singers, speakers, drag artists, performers, and trans voice users.

Their work begins with listening: to what someone wants, what feels pleasurable or comfortable in their voice, what they are curious about, and what possibilities they may already be reaching toward.

Rather than prescribing an ideal voice, Oceana offers practical tools and a space to experiment with them—supporting participants in developing greater vocal choice, comfort, confidence and expressive freedom.

Come As You Are

The program is being developed in collaboration with Come As You Are and Gender Gear, alongside Out There Singing.

Come As You Are is a Toronto worker-owned co-operative with a long history of pleasure-centred sexual health education, gender affirmation and community programming. Together, the partnership allows voice exploration to live within a wider network of community knowledge, resources, guest facilitators and gender-affirming care.

Together, we are creating a space where voice can be practiced not as a performance of who someone is supposed to be, but as an exploration of what already feels meaningful, pleasurable and possible.

Your voice can be a place to practice possibility.

Sometimes we know what we want before we know exactly how to get there.

A sound catches our attention. A way of speaking feels unexpectedly comfortable. We sing something and recognize ourselves in it. We try something playful and discover that we'd like to keep it.

Those moments are offers.

Our approach is to listen to them.

Gender-affirming voice work can absolutely involve technique: pitch, resonance, vocal weight, articulation, range, coordination, stamina and vocal health. But technique can serve curiosity rather than determine the destination.

We can also use the voice as a place to practice taking ourselves seriously. To hear an impulse, give it room, develop the skills to follow it, and experience what happens when something we imagined becomes something we can actually do.

Pleasure belongs in that process. So do experimentation, laughter, uncertainty, changing your mind, and discovering something you weren't looking for.

And doing that alongside other people matters.

Community gives us somewhere to practice being heard—and somewhere to listen while others discover what being heard means to them.

Whether you're curious about your speaking voice, your singing voice, gender expression, performance, creativity, or simply what might feel good to explore, there is room to begin where you are.

You don't need to arrive knowing what your voice is supposed to become.

You can arrive listening.
