Cabaret Studio

What are you making?

The Out There Singing Cabaret Studio is a space to develop original work through experimentation, craft, performance, and community sharing.

Bring work at any stage, from the first impulse to something nearly ready for an audience, and we will develop it together.

A Place to Make Things

Together, we:

  • ♦ Develop creative ideas from the ground up
  • ♦ Explore voice, music, text, movement, drag, character and performance
  • ♦ Build creative and performance skills
  • ♦ Try unfinished work at heart-centred studio Cabarets
  • ♦ Support one another in seeing our creative visions come to life.

There is room for technique and room for instinct. Loud or quiet, polished or messy, playful or serious, familiar or completely out of the box.

How the Studio Works

Biweekly Office Hours

This is where we make things.

Bring whatever you're working on—or the beginning of an idea you don't quite know what to do with yet. Together, we can explore structure, storytelling, music, voice, character, staging, performance, creative blocks, or simply work out what comes next.

Creative vocal work in the Cabaret Studio

Monthly Cabaret

Part performance. Part gathering. Part creative ritual.

Each cabaret takes on a theme—an invitation to play with what we're carrying, and what we might be moving toward. Performance, reflection, celebration, and simple shared rituals through an evening of creative art sharing. The work doesn't have to be finished. But it gets to be alive.

Creative & Vocal Tools

Exercises, prompts, warm-ups and practical tools support the work between gatherings & office hours. Oceana's background in voice means technical vocal support is always available when it's useful—but voice is one tool within a much bigger creative toolbox.

Community

Making things is different when other people are making alongside you. The studio is a place to exchange ideas, find collaborators, celebrate experiments and become part of a community invested in one another's creative lives.

Your Creative Facilitator

Oceana Dix

Oceana Dix is a voice educator, drag artist, filmmaker, and creator of Out There Singing.

With a Master's degree in Musical Theatre from the University of Surrey (UK), professional performance training, contemporary vocal pedagogy, and experience creating work across music, theatre, drag and film, Oceana brings a wide creative toolkit into the room.

Their work is rooted in helping people take their creative impulses seriously—offering craft, practical support and space to explore an idea without prescribing what it should become.

The Cabaret Studio is queer- and trans-affirming, sex-positive and consent-based. Work can be personal, playful, intimate, provocative, traditional, experimental—or something else entirely. We approach what people bring with curiosity, while respecting the consent and boundaries of everyone sharing the space.

There is room for the work you want to make here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Drag Out Your Voice?

It's still here! Drag Out Your Voice was always meant for more than drag and voice alone. Cabaret Studio is the next chapter: the same spirit of experimentation and community, with more room for all the different things people want to create. Drag remains very welcome—alongside singing, acting, writing, music, storytelling, movement, interdisciplinary work and things we don't have a category for yet.

Do I have to perform at the cabarets?

No. The cabaret is an opportunity, not an obligation. You can perform, experiment, witness, connect, or simply spend time around other people making things. Though I would absolutely recommend attending the cabarets, it is perfectly OK for your voice to develop in the biweekly office hours.

Do I need professional experience?

No. Bring the experience you have. We can work with craft and technique at many different levels. Curiosity is enough to begin.

What can I bring?

Whatever you're interested in developing. The studio is designed to make room for a wide range of identities, experiences and forms of expression. We talk openly about consent and boundaries so that people can express what they want to while everyone in the room remains part of deciding what kind of space we're creating together.
